Flights from Europe to Frankfurt: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who flew the route from Europe to Frankfurt
Verified travelerFlew with Condor-Jul 2026
First make sure you have time to clear customs in Frankfurt. Each passenger takes 7 to 8 minutes to check passports. You MUST have 2 and a half hours layover to make the connecting flight. We had 1 hour and 40 minutes and we would have missed it, my disabled parents are the only reason we made it there and back. They took up in the "assisted" line or the whole group would not have made it to rome or back to san francisco.
JudithFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2026
Be aware of the new EES scheme. We queued at Frankfurt for 1.5 hours on arrival. Excellent flight with Lufthansa from Edinburgh to Frankfurt.
LaurenceFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2026
You need to allow at least 2 hours to get through border control or you will miss your flight. The lines are long.
Verified travelerFlew with Austrian Airlines-Jun 2026
If you are not an EU passport holder allow for at least 2 hours to clear passport control at Frankfurt.
HyFlew with United Airlines-Jul 2026
Flights from Prague to Frankfurt am Main are within the Schengen Zone, which can minimize airport delays.
PamFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2026
Make sure you have lots of connecting time out of Frankfurt if you are leaving the EU.
AlexFlew with Austrian Airlines-Jun 2026
Plan more time for connecting flights. The European outbound passport control took 1 hour for me.
Dora LeighFlew with United Airlines-Jun 2026
Make sure to give yourself enough time to make your connection
CaraFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2026
You need at LEAST 2 hours connection when your connection is in Frankfurt. The plane will land but then you have to get on a bus to get to a terminal. Depending on your next terminal, you may need to do another bus to the next terminal. Also be aware of the EES system. Could take a long time! I seriously dislike this airport. Horrible to get through and know what to do and when!
BernardFlew with Lufthansa-Aug 2026
Airport security in CPH is extremely rigid. Double check that you have no fluids or forbidden items in your hand luggage. And when they say you can leave your watch and belt on when walking through the scanner, don’t believe them. You can’t. And when my belt flagged an alarm I was subjected to the most invasive uncomfortable body scruffing I have ever experienced. Hands inside my pants and under my shirt etc.
Verified travelerFlew with Condor-Aug 2026
Eat before you get to the airport there are virtually no dining options.
OlgaFlew with United Airlines-Mar 2026
Well try to choose seats in advance and arrive in advance as the directions in the airport were confusing: terminal 3 we flew from was closed.
TinFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2025
Get your carry on and checked baggage figured out prior to arriving at the airport and any fees or special handling needed
FiruzFlew with British Airways-Dec 2025
be early at london airport as it can be very busy at security. Flight announcement are not brilliant at terminal 5
IvanFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2025
The first airline was operated by Croatia airline which had a 1hr+ delay. Leave enough room for connecting flight (at least for 2hr)
RalitsaFlew with Lufthansa-Apr 2025
There is a water fountain at the airport. Bring your own empty bottle, and you do not have to pay 5 euro for a water bottle (unless you would like to - up to you :)
MichaelFlew with Air Canada-Dec 2024
This is a busy little airport in the morning, so leave time for security. The staff are incredibly nice but it can take a while when it’s crowded.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Feb 2025
Any lay over times under 1,5 hours are very risky. Frankfurt is a large airport and requires lost of time for security and passport controls. Also, very short lay over times do not guarantee that your luggage will make it onto your connecting flight.
AnitaFlew with Lufthansa-Feb 2025
In Terminal 2 at Salzburg don't go through security too early as there is not much room airside and it was very cramped
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Feb 2025
Plan time for 5 security checkpoints before boarding.
J BFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2024
err, try not to - take train or car. Leipzig airport is fine - albeit amongst the rudest security staff anywhere in world - quite small so easy to get in/out, parking is great. Just avoid flying Lufthansa.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2024
don't travel in November early December to Krakow Krakow airport doesn't have radars to help airplane navigate through fog. and that for is a normal thing at that time.
MauriceFlew with United Airlines-Sept 2024
Lufthansa is great. Frankfurt airport in HUGE. Try to arrange for cart for transferring between flights. Our connecting flight was from A26 to Z69...about a mile walk!!!
GaryFlew with Lufthansa-Oct 2024
Try to ensure plenty of time if you are flying on from Frankfurt. Our flight from Munich was delayed and when we landed we had a 26 minute run/walk to our connecting flight. We also had to go thru security again and it was painfully slow in Frankfurt. I literally sprinted to my flight as they were preparing to close the door and had them hold it for my wife and two others who were traveling on this flight.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Sept 2024
If driving a rental car, take physical instructions and a physical map with you in addition to your GPS. The Apple Maps GPS erred several times on route, creating stress and delaying our arrival by about 20 minutes. I plan to also follow-up with Budget rent-a-car to clarify their instructions about where their drop off location is.
RickFlew with Lufthansa-Oct 2024
If you have a connecting flight, avoid mega airports like Frankfurt, Charles de Gaul and Heathrow.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Oct 2024
Longer layover is necessary. One hour: be prepared to run.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Oct 2024
Leave lots of layover time for connecting flights
SemiaFlew with Lufthansa-Jul 2024
The airline is fine it is just have ample time a lot of delays, if you have a connection after landing in Frankfurt
ElizabethFlew with Lufthansa-Jul 2024
Plan on a long wait to get through security in Chisinau.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Aug 2024
Don’t choose it if you’ve got 90 minutes or less to get to your connection. I missed mine and had to pass through the passport checkpoint a 2nd time. All because Lufthansa Service center nearest me and my missed flight was closed. I ended up on another flight: to Munich—it took me 10+ hours to get to my Munich-SFO flight. FRA is too large to navigate if you’re in a hurry
HeatherFlew with Lufthansa-Aug 2024
They are super strict on carry-on size and weight. I have never seen an airline weigh a carry-on before. Also if flying through Germany, alott yourself extra time for a connecting flight. It is a cluster!
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Aug 2024
Frankfurt is a terribly designed airport. Certainly give yourself more than a 90 minute layover. We were so close to missing our flight and had to run so far to get to our next gate.
EktaFlew with Lufthansa-Apr 2024
Just make sure your carry on is very small and not a larger roll on carry on bc you won’t be able to take on board if it is the intermediate size carry on
HenryFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2024
arrive no more than 90 minutes before your departure time
PatriciaFlew with Lufthansa-Mar 2024
Plan a longer transfer time in this airport
JerryFlew with Lufthansa-Mar 2024
Avoid flying through Germany when there are strikes going on.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Jan 2024
Give yourself plenty of time between connecting flights ,so you don’t have to worry about getting to the gates.
Verified travelerFlew with Lufthansa-Feb 2024
Allow extra time to transit for connecting flight, 2 hours at least!
LavanFlew with Lufthansa-Jan 2024
Plan for a complicated transfer. Frankfurt am main is large. Even if you make it, your luggage may not. Take photos of your luggage in the hold.

Great movie selection. Seats as comfortable as is possible for economy.

Flight was cancelled months ago but we were not notified. Ended up in the last row next to the bathroom

I thought it was good. There's not much you can do for a short flight for entertainment and the comfort was nice.

Boarding was annoying. Just at boarding they changed my bought and extra payed comfort seat for normal economy seat. And on my seat they placed someone else.

It was great for a short flight - but due to turbulence no service, and there is no entertainment Appreciated leaving and arriving on time!

The airline is ok there was a delay but I made home ok Serving water for local trip for international to Frankfurt it was cracker and water Since it was a short trip it was ok I would not recommend for long flight

Everything was smooth. Staff was great. No delays. Truly wonderful and seamless

Flight was a code share of Lufthansa. Check-in, baggage drop, and flight was all with Lufthansa. Other than the flight being 30 min. delayed, it was pretty much a standard Lufthansa flight. They only offer a free water and chocolate; all other drinks and food are a la carte.

Business class is the worst business class I have ever seen. It’s worse than some American Airlines domestic coach class seats.

Never made it on Thai plane due to all the other planes being late

Great flight just took some time to board even when lining up early for the flight, even taking off took longer then expected.

ontime and super quick boarding and disembarking. I made it in 6 min from airplane through passport control to the train platformin Cologne. Amazingly quick airport.

Boarding was fast and efficient. The crew was super friendly. Since it’s a budget airline and it’s a short flight, I can’t expect food or entertainment.

If you buy a cabin luggage, but don’t need it for your kids, so you will end up with mixed priorities. And you will need to use non priority line

Boarding waiting outside in storm and rain is not OK

East check in and security. They are always delayed though. ALWAYS!

Amazed at huge number of people who hadn’t booked cabin bags with big troller cases and rucksacks, not being stopped, what’s the point in following rules or paying more if you don't have to bother?

It was a short flight (1.2h), and everything went smoothly.

Very good, everything went straight forward, boarding, during the flight, landing and all on time Well done

Due to long security check and no last call announcements from Gate staff, my family and 12 other passengers missed the flight.

Lost our luggage, now two days and four $30 each taxi trips to airport and long lines in taxi queue because Lufthansa didn’t get it right, by not recognizing new delays between flights caused byEU new lengthy crossing requirements for non EU travelers, so luggage lost because traditionally methodical and orderly Germans not paying attention.

The flight on time, flawless check in and boarding process, the crew was very friendly.

It is ridiculous that Lufthansa weighs your carry-on bags. It's also ridiculous how strict they are about the 50 pound rule when you're flying overseas for nearly 3 weeks. The reality is, that if you book a business or first class ticket you get a $70 luggage allowance. It's bullshit that it's not about safety. It's not about regulation. It's about money. And that pisses me off. Furthermore, under price, which I assume was the travel consolidator for my ticket sold me some bullshit ticket that did not include to check luggage. What a bunch of nonsense. That's a scam. There shouldn't even be a ticket offered to Europe without checked luggage. I don't know how most people are, but now I'm gonna be very skeptical about using KAYAK again and flying Lufthansa. I think maybe it's best I just booked with the airline directly.

Crrew great. Seating space getting worse that worse. Food awful

Flight was delayed by 40min and when we eventually boarded, there was a mad scramble to save time. We were told no hand luggage would be accepted and it must be checked in. I was on a connect flight so wanted my hand luggage with me for the next flight. They were so rude at the gate and didn’t want to let me take my cabin-approved bag on board. I had to go buy a bag and transfer the essentials to take into the double connect flight. Once I was on board I saw there was ample space in overhead bins. I asked to go fetch my bag which was literally outside the aircraft in the walkway. That was not allowed. On board, Lufthansa is actually a low-cost airline for continental flights. Buy your own snacks. This surprised me because they are part of Star Alliance Airlines and on my domestic flight with SAA I received a drink and a snack box with sandwich and dried fruit on a 55min flight. The seat pitch on Lufthansa is also smaller than for the Middle Eastern and Asian airlines so comfort was not great for me who is 1,85cm tall. The third connection with SAA was a dream - friendly staff, quick and easy boarding and overall pleasant experience.

Staff was good on flight - helpful and pleasant. Food was good too. Bathroom situation not good - long waits even though we were in Premium Economy. Transit from previous flight was horrendous in Frankfurt! Aircraft taxied forever after landing, bus ride from plane to airport building was forever, then had to take train to Terminal Z, had to walk miles to get to Security Check, lines were unbelievably long, then further walking to gate. Barely made it even though I had a stopover of 1 hour and 40 minutes!

In business on the top-deck of an overnight transatlantic flight. A family with uncontrolled young children were there too. All night they were running around up and down the walkway while squealing . . .

Lufthansa was great, out of my own financial limitations I had to be in economy, it’s really tough on my back for long haul flights

Aircraft felt very old and business class was not as nice as on other airlines. Also 3 of the 4 flights on this trip were delayed.

Generally OK. The very worst part was the food we were served (on a special diet) which the crew apologised for and said they took photos for there managers. This flight was using a code-share from Discovery Airways, so perhaps not Lufthansa's direct fault. The general food was far better but definitely not plentiful unlike some other airlines. Otherwise it was a nothing special experience unlike the superb time we had last year for a similar route on Cathay!

Great flight and great crew. Many thanks to them for their hard work making our trip so relaxing.

Online check-in was unavailable for my flight. So I waited 40 min in the queue at the check-in counter. Then, unlike any other airline in the world (and I am a very frequent international flyer) Pegasus was adamant that my CPAP was just another carry on and that I had to pay extra for it. Then, after I had paid in advance for a seat, they insisted I could not sit in an exit row because I was over 60 years old (I'm clearly in good shape and buy exit row seats more or less weekly). We pushed back harder and harder and insisted on talking to the station chief, who spoke with the counter staff by phone (not to me) and eventually relented. Experience on boarf was ok-- for a budget airline.

Not because when i try to do check in there is only in turkish language i can not select other language

Pegasus Airlines which is the most efficient and cost worth low cost airline all over the Europe

Pegasus is a very efficient airline. Passengers, however are sometimes unruly. Getting up right after take off. Getting up right when we land and before getting to the gate. Switching seats to the front so she can get a better seat. It is unfair for those that actually paid for seats. Flight attendants seem to not enforce it. One or two bad actors ruins it. Overall, the airline is great.

It was like moving cattle around. Very abrupt, uncomfortable and not much hospitality

Flight delayed by 1hr when we already boarded because someone had to get off. Leg room is terrible for 6ft people like me.

Cheap and cheerful. It’s a super cheap, no frills flight. Very professional and as it’s an A320 relatively spacious. Seats do not recline. Happy with the service. You get what you pay for. Can’t complain

I had 4 flights for less than a week and there were no delays and issues. Thanks to the crews and for perfectly organised service.

Didn't enforce passengers to wear medical grade masks nor that they even properly wear their masks throughout the flight. So it was lots of people of unknown vaccination status all around me without masks on the whole flight.

The flights & staffs were great. However, Frankfurt passport control was terrible: long line, unsupportive airport staff, I would have missed the flight to SFO had not my fellow travelers let me get to the head of the line. An hour and 40 min connection time is way too optimistic for getting into (out of) Schengen area. A 3 hour layover time would be safer but not without some stress.

Crew and seats were ok. Food was just simply terrible.

The flight was fine, only issue my friend had was how small the seats were, it's a 10 hour flight so it becomes a bit of an issue when you're sort of cramped.

Based on some reviews, my expectations were low. I must say, the experience in Premium Economy was terrific. Comfortable seat, food was good and service was consistently good. I would certainly consider Condor again.

Missed connection due to no fault of our own, rude staff across the board, nearly 4 hrs in line for Condor service desk to ‘rebook’. Paid $5000 just to be lucky enough to get home next day.. will never fly with condor again.

The worst experience with an airline in my 50 years of flying.

The flight left 1.5 hours late but there was no information about the delay. My business class cabinet had two small children who cried much of the trip. Service seemed rushed.

I didn't like breakfast, I prefer plain rolls with butter.

Part of our luggage was lost and we had to wait 48 hours before receiving it. Also someone had to wait in the hotel to get it!!! Frustrating & disappointing

Condor computers constantly shut down. They had to book entire 747 off one computer. Condor does not leave enough time for their own scheduled layovers in Frankfurt. It is not possible to get through customs and to the gate on time. Both trips were a mess. Condor was so bad that they had to book half the people on Lufthansa to complete their journey. I do not recommend Condor for any reason for anyone.
